The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State has an opening for an experienced Mechanical Checker. Responsibilities include: Review and provide comments, corrections, or suggestions for detail drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials, and other documentation using accepted methods and techniques including drawing preparation to ASME Y14.100 and the application, understanding, and explanation of GD&T (ASME Y14.5.1M); review and provide comments, corrections, or suggestions for moderate to complex research engineering programs utilizing computer aided design, documentation, databases, or other software tools; review mechanical CAD file creation rules and completeness of design documentation including notes and manufacturing information to ensure all phases of documentation efforts are in compliance with applicable standards; integrate client needs to develop appropriate strategies for implementing requirements across a broad range of programs and initiatives, collaborate with engineers to assess program needs, establish timelines for project completion, and identify desired outcomes; develop and/or review technical information to support the program management decision-making process; serve as liaison between technical staff and user groups to resolve customer/user problems and concerns using best customer service practices; provide professional support to multiple types of customers with varying personalities and requirements, determine scope of work required for assigned projects; initiate, develop, recommend, and implement policies, practices, and Standard Engineering Procedures; provide specialized leadership, direction, and oversight related to documentation standards and related disciplines; identify risk, provide risk mitigation strategies, and escalate issues to the appropriate manager, coordinate, perform, and review internal and external quality reviews, and ensure compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and audit requirements; support the change management process and the configuration management baselines of documentation, hardware, and software; provide appropriate training and mentoring in areas of responsibility/expertise to current and new employees related to the approved documentation process; provide work status updates to senior personnel and engineering staff; and participate in design review and configuration management meetings. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred experience areas include: Familiarization with Product Data Management concepts and software tools; and experience with common manufacturing processes, preferably with knowledge of design for manufacturing principles. Requirements include: Experience with drafting CAD software, creating and reviewing mechanical designs, and the related detail and assembly documentation. Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong organizational and customer service skills, and the ability work well in a team environment, specifically in resolving differences between opposing points of view and interpretation, is essential. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. This is a one-year fixed-term renewable appointment.
