The Peer Mentor position plays a major role in helping new students transition into University life at Penn State Lehigh Valley. The Peer Mentor is an EOP/CSP student themselves, has gone through the Summer Bridge Program, and understands the functions and expectations of the program. The Peer Mentor will attend a one-day Peer Mentor Training at the Lehigh Valley campus in May 2020 and is encouraged to complete a one-credit Peer Tutoring course during Spring 2020. Primary Responsibilities: Upon the beginning of the summer, the Peer Mentor will be assigned to a small group (3-5) of new incoming EOP/CSP first year students. The mentor is to foster a relationship with the new incoming students and support them in their transition to Penn State. The Peer Mentor must be available to work and assist during the Summer Bridge Program (July 29-31). Primary responsibilities during the Summer Bridge Program include: Facilitate check-ins and check-outs in the residence halls. Live in residence hall with the new incoming students. Serve on a student life panel. Attend all sessions with the students. Set up classroom per the professor’s needs. Plan and execute evening team building activities/programs. Help students with any comments, questions, concerns. Maintain safety and security in the residence hall. Create a welcoming and inclusive community. Cultivate positive relationships with the students. Provide new incoming students college life perspective. Serve as a role model and resource for new students. Work closely with Dr. O’Neill, Aziza Khalil, and other faculty and staff. Qualifications: You must be a current EOP/CSP student at Penn State Lehigh Valley with a minimum GPA of 2.5. A minimum GPA of 2.5 must also be maintained while serving as a Peer Mentor.
