Description

Penn State Learning is seeking an individual to assist part-time in guiding the day-to-day operations of around 80 undergraduate writing and language tutors at University Park campus, as well as those conducting online tutorials. The position communicates with faculty members teaching languages and writing-intensive courses about their students` needs and develops tailored workshops and other outreach activities that tutors may deliver; works with scholars-in-residence and the program coordinator to provide training and professional development to new and experienced tutors, to assess programs, and to design peer tutor courses and other instructional programs; helps develop instructional plans for writers with complex needs, and directly provides writing consultation when peer tutors need assistance; and provides direct instructional support to tutors, including the teaching of peer tutor courses, as needed. The position promotes student and faculty involvement in related programs and projects, helps manage the recruiting and hiring of new tutors, and represents Penn State Learning at student orientation fairs and similar University events. This is a part-time, temporary position for spring semester, 2020, only. Requires a Master`s degree or equivalent experience in literary or writing/rhetoric studies. Also required are experience working as an undergraduate, graduate, or professional tutor, substantial supervisory experience — particularly of college students, substantial experience teaching college composition and/or other writing intensive courses, and experience working with multilingual writers and speakers. Candidates should have knowledge of writing center theories and practices, writing across the curriculum, scholarship pertaining to writing development, multimodal composition and new media of writing, principles and practices of supervision and training, standard written English, Microsoft software, and learning management systems.
