The Advanced Technology Department within the Communications Systems Division of the Communications, Information and Navigation Office (CINO) within the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State is looking for a motivated and talented undergraduate student preferably in their senior level of study whose primary function will be to research, design, develop, integrate, and test advanced wireless RF communications systems. Responsibilities include: Algorithm and/or software design, develop C/C++ or equivalent code to interface with developed hardware and associated interfaces (SPI, I2C, etc.); integration of Software Defined Radio (SDR) hardware/software components as appropriate; evaluate/develop communication security protocols; and MATLAB/LabVIEW modeling and simulation. Prior experience with the following is highly desired: Computer Networking; communications protocols - OSI stack, UDP/TCP/IP; familiarity with wireless specifications such as cellular (4G/5G)/WiFi (802.11); and basic RF principles, embedded software/hardware, wireless/cyber security, C-Language programming experience. Candidate must be a team player. Students studying Electrical Engineering or Computer Science are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will work up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters and 40 hours/week over the summer. This is a paid internship located at ARL’s Main Laboratory at the University Park campus; relocation and housing are not provided.
