Description

The Laboratory of Plant Abiotic Stress (Dr. Ruairidh Sawers) in the Department of Plant Science at The Pennsylvania State University seeks a Specialist in laboratory and field-based plant research. The position will have responsibility for running of specialized analysis/evaluation of plant material. Once fully trained, the candidate will be expected to work semi-independently to generate a workflow for processing of large numbers of samples. The candidate will train additional users in equipment operation and research techniques, explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operations limitations and outcomes. In addition, the position will provide day-to-day support for general laboratory activities and oversee overall operation. Duties will include support of an active maize genetics program, performing seed inventory and stock tracking, preparation of material for planting in both local and off-site field nurseries, conducting controlled pollinations in the field, harvest and seed sorting. The candidate will possess the organizational and communication skills required to coordinate field activities across multiple growing seasons, in national and international sites. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. It will be desirable to have previous experience with specialized techniques of plant material analysis available at the Department of Plant Science (including, but not limited, to one of XRF, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, Laser ablation micro-dissection). This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
