Description

The Biology Department at Penn State’s University Park campus is committed to innovative teaching and advising. We are seeking someone who can contribute to our educational mission in our undergraduate courses and biology academic advising center. The Department invites applications for a non-tenure track teaching professor starting Fall 2020. Teaching responsibilities will mainly be in our introductory undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses. Biology teaching faculty at Penn State are typically on 36-week appointments. The successful candidate will teach 2-3 biology courses per academic year as well as provide academic advising to undergraduate students for about 20 hours/week. Additional responsibilities may include recruiting and training laboratory teaching assistants and lecture learning assistants to be effective members of an instructional team, creating/ implementing inquiry-based class exercises, assisting with New Student Orientation (NSO), meeting with parents and prospective students, helping to coordinate special events, performing graduation and regular progress checks, and working directly with the Director for the Biology Undergraduate Advising Center, fellow advisers, and administrative assistants to support our educational mission. This is a fixed term position that is initially funded for the 2020/2021 academic year. Innovative, effective contributions to the teaching and advising goals of the department can lead to continuation in a multi-year appointment. Promotion through instructional ranks is available for this position. Qualifications: Master’s degree required, Ph.D. preferred. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Biology, Biology Education, or equivalent, at least two years of teaching experience in relevant courses and at least one year of advising experience. Undergraduate teaching experience that implements active learning strategies is required, and documented excellence in teaching and advising is important. Candidates should have comprehensive knowledge of their field. A demonstrated interest in pedagogy is highly desirable.
