Description

The College of the Liberal Arts at Penn State seeks a dynamic leader interested in promoting advising innovation and leading an experienced team of talented academic advisers. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating comprehensive academic advising operations for the college, including all major and pre-major advising. Liberal Arts Advising serves over 5000 undergraduate students and is the second largest college at Penn State. They will also provide direct supervision to the advising leadership team (four lead advisers and one academic recovery specialist) and, through the lead advisors, general supervision of all professional advisers (20 in total) to include hiring, training, and performance evaluation. The Director will work with the leadership team to determine the appropriate advising services and support to meet student needs and develop strategies to do so. They will also advise a small roster of students and ensure consistent and accurate service to students, plus resolve problems and disputes. The successful candidate will also coordinate with the leadership team to plan, organize, and administer the College’s participation in programs such as new student orientation, the first year experience, academic recovery and special population programming. They will collaborate with a dedicated team within Liberal Arts Undergraduate Studies including the Associate Dean, the Career Enrichment Network, the Office of Digital Media and Pedagogy, the Recruitment Coordinator, Student Services and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Using a student learning outcome-based approach, they will lead the assessment efforts for advising in the college and serve as a liaison to both internal and external units. The Director will work closely with department heads and undergraduate officers to help reach and maintain departments’ advising goals. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher in an education or social science related discipline plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate will have demonstrated supervisory experience, significant background in academic advising, a strong desire to develop expertise in emerging best practices in academic advising, and a passion for mentoring staff and professional development. Essential qualities and skills include, but are not limited to, collaborative project management skills, advanced communication and organizational abilities, creativity, capacity to work with a broad range of stakeholders, and the ability to solve complex problems and build consensus with diverse audiences.
