The Computational Methods Development Department, located in the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office, in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State is seeking a High Performance Computing Engineer to assist in the development of physics-based tools on state-of-the-art and next generation High Performance Computing (HPC) hardware. Responsibilities include: Manage, monitor, and help maintain ARL HPC systems; interact with engineers, faculty, and students on computational needs; implement state-of-the-art high-performance computing algorithms to ensure efficient solutions for in-house-developed codes; assist in the development of physics-based computational fluid and structural dynamic codes operating in a heterogeneous high-performance computing environment; provide guidance for short and long-term strategies for expanding and acquiring ARL’s next generation supercomputer hardware and software to maintain solver efficiency and fast turnaround of Navy-critical modeling activities; implement solver and application-specific input/output algorithms to optimize disk usage and solution times for high-speed, high-throughput file systems; attend conferences and workshops relevant to HPC and advance skills; and stay current with emerging HPC technologies and trends. This job will be filled as a level 4, or level 5, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline or higher plus ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 4. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Applied Mechanics, or another related computational field is desired. Preferred experience includes: Scripting and coding: bash, python, perl, FORTRAN C/C++; large scale parallel filesystems (GPFS, Lustre, etc.); configuring and managing batch schedulers, specifically Slurm, Torque, PBS; common HPC software stacks and management tools; knowledge of standard networking, security practices, and user management; configuration management tools such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or Salt; version control systems: Git, SVN, etc; and a working knowledge of Cray proprietary HPC hardware and administration. An active Top Secret security clearance is highly desired. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of setting and meeting goals; excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills; effective problem solving skills; and the ability to work well under pressure of deadlines. You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply. Candidates selected will be subject to a government security investigation. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion; we believe this is central to our success as a Department of Defense designated University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). We are at our best when we draw on the talents of all parts of society, and our greatest accomplishments are achieved when diverse perspectives are part of our workforce. This is a one-year fixed-term renewable appointment.
