Penn State’s Department of Landscape Architecture and the Institutes of Energy and the Environment (IEE) jointly seek an outstanding new faculty focused on “water-related resilience” to fulfill goals of the IEE, the Penn State Water Faculty Consortium, and the Department. The disciplinary home will be the Department of Landscape Architecture; the position is co-funded through Penn State University’s Institutes of Energy and the Environment (IEE), http://www.iee.psu.edu/. Note that this is one of four new IEE co-hires focusing on water at Penn State. We specifically seek a 36-week tenure-track faculty member with research and design expertise in aquatic ecology focusing on coastal, riverine, and wetland system resilience. Candidates should possess substantial expertise and capacity to analyze existing water issues, develop proposals to address those issues in environmental designs that are both functional and experiential, and assess the outcomes. They further must show evidence of success in teaching and be enthusiastic team players who thrive in collaborative environments. They should be collaborative leaders who will promote and enhance excellence and innovation in interdisciplinary research. We further seek a faculty member who will contribute to a climate that embraces excellence and diversity: evidence of a commitment to working collegially with individuals from diverse backgrounds is required. Penn State’s Water Faculty consortium of over 100 university-wide water scientists, researchers, and educators have led decades of high impact research, education, and service addressing the many dimensions of water, from basic to applied (https://water.psu.edu/). 2 - The mission of the Department of Landscape Architecture is “inspired work grounded in commitment to environmental and social good” (https://stuckeman.psu.edu/larch/) and the goal of E+D is “Research activated design intervention that significantly improves the ecological health of the designed world” (https://issuu.com/stuckemanschool/docs/eplusd_symposium_vol1_single-pages). The successful candidate will work with faculty and students on existing water research and curricular initiatives in Landscape Architecture as well as build new initiatives and programs in conjunction with the IEE mission. Specifically, this faculty member will: Enthusiastically and effectively engage in transdisciplinary research initiatives focused on water-related resilience, advancing Penn State’s accomplishments in water research and design; Address Penn State’s commitment to expanding student awareness of resilience issues and the College of Arts & Architecture’s commitment to delivering compelling general education by designing an online, interdomain general education course (arts/natural sciences) in “design for resilience;” Teach upper-level, interdisciplinary design studios and/or water-related resilience electives, as well as guide graduate students studying water resilience in design and environmental science majors.Required qualifications include a professional degree in environmental design (landscape architecture, architecture, civil engineering, etc.) and a track record of ecological research and/or design in water-related resilience demonstrated by degree or experience. A Ph.D. is preferred.
