The College of Education invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar for Penn State’s Restorative Justice Initiative (RJI). RJI is a university-wide coalition of faculty members, graduate students, staff, and community groups dedicated to restoring and empowering individuals that are incarcerated through education and meaningful engagement in civic life. RJI, supported by the Provost’s Office, has initiated a broad effort to expand reentry and education opportunities in the state correctional facilities in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The development of a more comprehensive program is an important next step to widen the scope of RJI’s impact. One of the strategic goals is to credential the courses offered in the correctional facilities and, ultimately, create a prison education program that provides students in the facilities an opportunity to earn a degree. The Postdoctoral Scholar, through scholarship, research, and practice will help RJI build an alliance that can support the infrastructure necessary to sustain a statewide prison education program. RJI aims to reshape the educational and carceral landscapes of the state and provide co-curricular opportunities and career preparation services that will enhance students’ readiness to succeed. In order to support the development of a high-quality program, the Postdoctoral Scholar will provide curricular, supervisory and research support to help the program grow strategically, collaboratively, and responsibly. The Postdoctoral Scholar will support research and evaluation initiatives related to rehabilitation, reentry and education. The role will also support programmatic development, teaching, supervision, and program administration, as well as collaborative efforts to help scale-up the program. The scholar will also help foster cross-collaborative partnerships with faculty and develop curriculum materials and educational resources that facilitate in-person and online instruction. There will be a dual reporting line for the position which will be connected to the Office of the Assistant Dean for Multicultural Programs and the Director of the Restorative Justice Initiative. This is a one-year fixed term appointment with the possibility of renewal. Applicants should have successfully defended their dissertation before beginning this post-doctoral position.
