The Office of Technology Management within the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking qualified, self-motivated applicants for the position of Technology Licensing Officer embedded in the Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. The mission of the Office of Technology Management is to protect Penn State intellectual property (IP), identify its commercial potential, and stimulate economic development through the transfer of Penn State technologies to the marketplace. Penn State research expenditures in Fiscal Year 2019 were in excess of $950 million. This position will manage a substantial portfolio of healthcare and medically related IP from the College of Medicine in Hershey as well as a small portfolio of technologies from the main campus located at University Park, PA. Primary responsibilities include soliciting, developing, and screening invention disclosures and assessing their commercial potential; formulating IP protection strategies including patenting when appropriate; developing strategies for marketing of select technologies; negotiating, drafting, monitoring, and enforcing intellectual property agreements including license agreements, option agreements, inter-institutional agreements, etc.; supporting the dynamic intellectual property and commercialization needs and priorities of the College of Medicine; understanding the biomedical and healthcare research activities across the University; participating in outreach events to promote licensing and commercialization opportunities; and communicating and coordinating frequently with other stakeholders in the Invent Penn State community. This position will be located at the College of Medicine in Hershey, PA, and will report to the Assistant Vice President for Research and Director of the Office of Technology Management at University Park, PA, which is responsible for the management of intellectual property developed at Penn State. This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher in a technical or business discipline or higher plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A strong technical background in biomedical/life sciences; business and/or technology licensing experience and working knowledge of intellectual property protection strategies is desirable. Ph.D. degree is preferred. The candidate should have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; good negotiation skills; the ability to interpret and manage numerous complex agreements; the ability to manage and coordinate multiple and diverse projects simultaneously through to completion; be highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently in a team environment; and have the ability to establish priorities.
