Description

The Database Specialist demonstrates proficiency in helping to develop and implement a systematic data management and program self-assessment process for the Penn State College of Medicine (PSCOM) Physician Assistant (PA) program that includes collecting and interpreting evidence of student learning, program administrative functions, and outcomes. The process includes the collection and study of quantitative and qualitative performance data that can be critically analyzed by the PA program to identify actions. The Database Specialist will collaborate with the Program leadership in the thoughtful design of data collection, management and interpretation. The Database Specialist will 1) interpret and communicate information, ideas and instructions clearly, accurately and persuasively both verbally and in writing; 2) collaborate with others such as statisticians, other programmers, database administrators to design or implement applications to meet the specifications of the data management plan to perform processes such as data entry, review, verification, validation, editing, auditing, query generation, student tracking, and report generation; 3) create procedures to identify potential data problems and resolve data issues prior to analysis; 4) create technical documents detailing defined procedures. Assist with design, development, testing, installation, implementation, modification and support new or existing database software in accordance with area standard practices to create a systematic program evaluation process. Assist with procedures to ensure database optimization, database integrity . (relational integrity) and integrity of the transaction profile. Work with users to analyze their requirements. Assist with the preparation of test plans and write documentation. Assist in the investigation of data and/or program problems; determine source of problem; take corrective action. Maintain familiarity with installed software standards and procedures and evaluate other tools to determine the appropriate fit into database development. Participate in a portion of a large task or project. Design and implement database structures. Ensure database optimization, database integrity (relational integrity) and integrity of the transaction profile. Design, develop, test, debug, install, implement, modify and support new or existing database software in accordance with area standard practices. Prepare test plans and write documentation. Work with users to analyze their requirements. Investigate data and/or program problems; determine source of problem; take corrective action. Maintain familiarity with installed software standards and procedures and evaluate other tools to determine the appropriate fit into database development. Provide technical guidance to other staff. Develop queries using SQL to report data from multiple systems. Create spreadsheets generated by various Learning Management systems. Ensure quality control standards on data entered into systems. Work with staff to develop test scripts for system upgrades to LCMS+ and Oasis. Monitor data in Learning Management and Exam systems, analyze for data errors and inconsistencies. Work with staff to correct data inaccuracies while maintaining data integrity. Develop Course, Faculty, and Student Performance evaluations using defined standards. Typically requires an Associate's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer 2+ years related experience and Bachelor’s degree or higher or an equivalent combination of education and experience
