As a member of Penn State’s Office of University Development (OUD), the Assistant Director of Annual Leadership Gifts plays an integral role in one of the most respected and successful fundraising operations in the country. Penn State is one of only a dozen public institutions nationwide to complete a $2 billion fundraising campaign, and our alumni association is the largest dues-paying organization of its kind in the world. This success depends not only upon our strong institutional culture of philanthropy, but also upon the more than 400 development and alumni relations staff members whose professionalism and expertise set the standard in the field. Annual Leadership Gifts Officers strategically assist the Office of University Development in its efforts to encourage and increase participation in the President’s Club gift recognition society (minimum annual gifts of $2,500 required) and are key contributors to the wide range of work as a member of the Office of Annual Giving Team. The Assistant Director has responsibility for solicitation of current and potential President’s Club members and many times makes the first face-to-face contacts on behalf of Penn State with alumni and friends, playing an important role in stewarding loyal supporters, helping these prospects and donors grow their engagement with multiple aspects of the University, and securing new and increased annual gifts that often lead to significant philanthropic discussions and activities for years to come. This individual will: establish, implement, and evaluate plans to solicit philanthropic support from alumni, parents and others who may have the potential to make annual gifts; conduct discovery visits to assess, cultivate, and solicit a portfolio of leadership annual giving prospects for gifts between $1,000 to $10,000 annually; make a minimum of 144 solicitations per fiscal year and average at least 188 visits per fiscal year; prepare, review and package proposal, solicitation, and cultivation materials; prepare correspondence to prospects and all contact reporting in a professional and timely manner; effectively communicate the mission of The Pennsylvania State University and promote a comprehensive understanding of the philanthropic priorities of the University; refer President’s Club donors who have potential to make a major gift to the appropriate college, campus or academic unit; work in coordination with the Manager of Annual Leadership Gifts to create annual solicitation goals and metrics to ensure effective and inclusive solicitation strategies, including coordinating efforts with the Office of Annual Giving. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer individuals who have completed the CASE Summer Internship or are candidates for the CASE North American Fundraising Residency Program. Extensive travel (including overnight and air travel) is required. Operation of a motor vehicle as part of the position’s duties is required. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check, in addition to standard background checks, is also required. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
