Description

Penn State State’s Enterprise Networking and Communication Services is seeking a highly motivated, self-driven, and collaborative team player to fill the position of Network Systems Specialist in the Network Services team. The successful candidate will be responsible for diagnosing, and correcting network troubles and performance issues; analyzing network traffic; installing new wired LAN and WAN services. This position interfaces with equipment and circuit vendors as well as University faculty, staff and students. On-call coverage and overnight travel is required. This job provides front-line support on the enterprise wide area network and local area networks that underpin all other data services for the University. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field is preferred. A work-related background with enterprise LANs, WANs, VLANs, MPLS/VPLS, Spanning Tree, routing protocols(OSPF and BGP) and Layer 2 and 3 switching. Moderate knowledge of data manipulation via structured queries and regular expressions. Experience with network monitoring applications is highly desirable. Must be a detail oriented, well organized, self-starter with the ability to work with diverse teams in a fast paced, dynamic environment. Requires the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently. Must have strong communication and customer relation skills. Must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation. This position requires strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively across (specialized and service) teams, strong analytical and network skills, enthusiastically learn new skills and technologies, handle multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously with a close attention to detail and minimal oversight. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job responsibilities. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
