Description

The Pennsylvania State University is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Dean for Student Affairs within Penn State Law and the School of International Affairs. This individual is responsible for providing strategic leadership and management of the Office of Student Affairs and for the organization and implementation of all activities and responsibilities related to the office. The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Dean and serves as a senior member of the Dean’s leadership group. The Assistant Dean for Student Services has responsibility for the leadership, strategic direction, project management, budget, and operations for the Law School's Office for Student Services. A significant portion of this position is devoted to developing and fostering high level relationships with Law School and University leaders, including: Associate and Assistant Deans, faculty, and Student Affairs Directors in order to understand resources and connect law students and law student organizations to the most appropriate resource to help them address their needs. The position provides leadership in decision-making, resolving problems, developing procedures, initiating new programs and engaging faculty, students and staff to meet the goals of the Office for Student Services in supporting the non-academic needs of law students and law student organizations. Serves as primary contact for law students with personal needs or concerns that impact their ability to succeed in law school and in the legal profession; provides referrals regarding mental health and substance abuse issues; and conducts programming to highlight law school, Penn State, community and bar association support for student wellbeing. Serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs liaison for student matters dealing with the law school's Honor Code, monitor student compliance with non-academic conduct polices, and work closely with Penn State’s Office for Student Conduct and Educational Equity in addressing law student misconduct. Serves as primary contact for students needing academic accommodations and coordinates reasonable accommodations with the law school registrar's office and faculty. Oversees the logistics, planning, and implementation of J.D. student orientation and works closely with the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion to create a climate that is welcoming and supportive to all students. Maintains relations with other law schools, professional associations, and service organizations to keep informed on national, regional, and local trends in law school student services administration and represent Penn State Law at professional meetings and conferences. Position requires a Master’s degree and at least eight years of effective experience in administration of higher education. A J.D. or other advanced degree is preferred. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate superior leadership contributing effectively to academic excellence, diversity, and quality improvement. Essential qualities and skills include, but are not limited to, planning, organizational, and management skills, excellent public speaking and communication abilities, high energy and creativity, capacity to work collaboratively with others, ability to resolve problems, and sound and ethical judgment.
