The Department of Radiation Oncology at Penn State Cancer Institute seeks a research associate to contribute to clinical and research outcomes on several projects related to radiation oncology. The successful candidate will have direct involvement in several ongoing and new projects that include a broad spectrum of methodologies such as prospective clinical trials, observational cohort studies, educational material development, and clinical research. The research associate would report directly to Nicholas G Zaorsky, MD. This person would have the opportunity to work on several projects, including Exercise therapy and Radiation Therapy (EXERT). This clinical trial is a joint force between Nicholas G Zaorsky, MD in Radiation Oncology and Katie Schmitz, Ph.D in Public Health Sciences and Kinesiology. The individual would help with getting the EXERT clinical trial off the ground, including patient screening, scheduling, paperwork, submissions of trials/grants, patient consents, and be involved in oncology-epidemiology projects. The research group that includes Drs. Zaorsky and Schmitz uses oncology epidemiology to focus on lifestyle interventions in cancer patients. The research associate may help with these analyses and also be a co-author on publications. This is an exceptional opportunity for an individual with an interest in pursuing a career in medicine, biomedical research, or public health, given the exposure to a broad range of research methods. You must be able to assist with all trial-related procedures, including but not limited to: writing, revising, and submitting protocols for internal and external review; acting as liaison with study sponsors; screen medical records for eligible study participants; administer consent form, eligibility criteria and questionnaires to protocol participants; data entry into REDCap system; participant follow-up; other clinical trial coordination as needed. Assist with trial-related regulatory procedures, including but not limited to: acting as primary liaison with Clinical Trials Office and Institutional Review Board; maintain all necessary regulatory documents (continuing-review submissions, modifications, amendments, etc.); assist with manuscript-related procedures, including but not limited to: study design conception; data queries; data analysis (according to skill level); drafting; editing; submission to journal. Other duties may include working with Radiation Oncology providers and/or medical students on new and ongoing research projects; mentor medical students regarding data collection, data analysis, and manuscript drafting and submission; other office related tasks. This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher , or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Efficient decision-making and problem-solving skills. High degree of independence. Comprehensive attention to detail. Well-developed computer skills are required, particularly familiarity with the Windows environment. Has extensive expertise in MS Office, particularly Word and Excel. Must exhibit flexibility, assertiveness, and a professional attitude. Must be able to maintain confidentiality in dealing with patient health data. Preferably has an advanced degree or is working toward an advanced degree (e.g. MS, MPH, MD, PhD). Preferably has statistical knowledge, has experience with EndNote, or able to learn. This is a fixed term appointment funded one year from date of hire with the possibility of refunding.
