The Child Maltreatment Solutions Network (Solutions Network) seeks applicants for a Research Data Analyst to support its Child Welfare Data Lab. This successful applicant for this position will assist with the acquisition, cleaning, documentation, organization, and analysis of data in support of the Solutions Network. The Solutions Network is an interdisciplinary group of faculty across Penn State (University Park and Hershey Medical School) focused on identifying the causes of child maltreatment and developing evidence-based approaches that will promote prevention, detection and treatment. The Child Welfare Data Lab works closely with the Penn State Data Accelerator to create and manage a repository of regional, statewide, and national administrative and public data sources related to child welfare and other public systems (e.g. child protection, foster care, healthcare, justice) reflecting child and family involvement in incidents of suspected child abuse or neglect and their impacts on child and family safety and wellbeing. The position of Research Data Analyst will include: processing, verifying, organizing, and maintaining child welfare and related administrative data holdings; restructuring and preparing data sets for project analyses; trouble-shooting data-related quality and management issues; documenting practices and procedures for cleaning and transforming of these data for use by internal and external users; coding data and documenting procedures to assist with common analysis processes to ensure consistency across users. Data-related planning includes: assisting in planning for data file creation and coding; consultation in creation of extracts to meet project-related data needs; planning for development and implementation of data analytic processes or extracts to meet project-related data needs. Data-related analytic and reporting tasks include: conducting data analyses for project-related deliverables, interpretation of analytic results, and preparation of output or summaries for reporting or other dissemination activities. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree in relevant social science and/or statistical field and additional years of experience in data management or analysis; or Master’s degree and at least 1 year of experience is highly preferred. Additional preferred qualifications include: knowledge of, or professional experience with, the child welfare system in the Commonwealth or other states; experience managing and analyzing large and complex datasets; prior training in research ethics; advanced Stata skills. Required qualifications include: excellent written and interpersonal communication skills; basic statistical skills; basic proficiency in one of the following software programs: Stata, SAS, Python, R; detail-oriented and highly organized; ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team; able to identify and solve problems independently; commitment to the ethical and professional handling of sensitive data. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with good possibility of re-funding.
