A Research Technologist 2 position is available in the Tumlinson lab in the Department of Entomology at Penn State. The successful candidate will conduct experiments aimed at understanding the chemical ecology of insects, including their interactions with plant and/or animal hosts. The successful candidate will collect and analyze biologically active organic compounds from various sources and develop and/or assist in developing bioassays to guide purification and identification of biologically active compounds. The selected candidate is expected to be experienced with and knowledgeable about chromatographic analytical chemistry and mass spectroscopy, learn how to design experiments, analyze results and troubleshoot. The successful candidate is also expected to maintain laboratory notebooks with accurate and complete records of laboratory work. Primary Duties: Manage day to day operations of laboratory, including overseeing maintenance of equipment and handling of overall logistics support for laboratory staff (carrying out laboratory order, replenishing consumables, preparing media and reagents, and maintaining sanitation); Enforce policies of chemical and biological safety and waste management and, in conjunction with institutional representatives, schedule waste removal and laboratory inspections; Assist with training and oversight of new laboratory members, including graduate students and postdocs; and Preservation of experimental data, including computer archiving of raw data and maintaining laboratory personal notebooks with accurate and complete records of laboratory work. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with a good possibility of re-funding.
