The Undersea Systems Office (USO) within the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking an Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Autonomy Scientist for our State College, PA location. Responsibilities for this position include: “Hands-on” technical support and leadership of sponsored research programs in a team-focused environment with a very innovative and motivated staff of scientists and engineers; mentorship of junior technical staff; strategic interaction with USO senior management; proposal development and sponsor interaction; collaboration with others working in AI and autonomy, both within and outside of Penn State; and participation in national/international professional societies and conferences. The opportunity exists to teach, advise students, chair graduate student committees, and be admitted to the graduate faculty of an academic department at Penn State University. The USO serves as a research center of excellence in undersea weapons, Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUVs), and advanced sonar supporting our national security and undersea warfare sponsors through the development and demonstration of science and technology. The office has approximately 350 employees and an annual budget in excess of $100 million. The individual sought for this position will develop and support cross-office initiatives in the development, demonstration, and prototyping of innovative, intelligent, autonomous, unmanned undersea systems. The ideal candidate should have an education background and/or previous work experience in autonomous systems, perception/machine vision, and deep learning, along with familiarity with the challenges inherent to operating in the undersea domain. This position will be cross posted as Research Faculty and Research and Development Engineer. This job will be filled as a level 4 or level 5, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline or higher plus ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 4. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, or Cognitive Science is preferred. Prior experience underwater applications is highly desired. Previous experience in securing funding from organizations like the Office of Naval Research, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the National Science Foundation, or other federal agencies that fund fundamental and/or applied research is desirable, but not required Prior experience in autonomous systems, perception/machine vision, and deep learning.
