The Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Forest Ecosystem Management. This is a non-tenure track, faculty position on a 48-week academic year appointment with 50% teaching, 40% extension and 10% Forestlands Management Office responsibilities in a fixed¬ term multi-year (3 year) contract with the opportunity and expectation for continued renewal. We seek a colleague to contribute to continuing excellence in forest ecosystem management and innovative instruction across classroom, with a commitment to hands-on lab and field experiences for students. Teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate courses in Forest Measurements, Timbersale Administration, Forest Soils Management as well as contributing to curriculum development and outcome assessment. The successful candidate will also be expected to advise undergraduate students and provide career guidance and participate in professional organizations and in course, curriculum, and program development. In addition, we seek an individual trained in forest resource management to work with our nationally recognized Penn State Extension Forestry and Wildlife Team. The individual will be responsible for actively working with the extension team to identify important educational needs and learning objectives and implementing programs that address them. Team members are expected to participate programmatically at the county, area, and state level. The individual in this position will undertake primarily these activities: provide diverse forest resources programming to private (non-industrial) forest landowners, natural resource professionals (state agency and consulting foresters, wildlife biologists, timber harvesters, etc.), youth, and educators; assist forest landowners and natural resource professionals in gaining knowledge, making decisions, establishing beneficial partnerships, and acquiring skills to manage forest resources sustainably so that these working forests provide enduring benefits; and encourage private landowners to obtain professional forestry assistance in managing their forestlands for long term health and productivity. The successful candidate will also direct the operation of the Penn State Forestlands. Responsibilities will include; developing, scheduling and overseeing the annual plan of activities such as road, trail and boundary maintenance, timbersales and herbaceous management activities, managing the Forestlands Management Office budget, supervising the field forester, working with researchers to locate suitable research sites, completing research contracts and ensuring proper research site retirement. Qualifications include a Master`s degree or higher plus fifteen years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience and a strong record of teaching scholarship including demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching and advising. Additional experience with geographic information systems and forest administration is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with degree(s) in forest resources management, forest ecosystem management, environmental science, silviculture, or other related disciplines, and to those that have related work experience in natural resources education or forest resource management. Candidates should have an advanced knowledge of and commitment to sustainable forestry, wildlife management, silviculture, insect and disease management, invasive and competing plants, and enjoy the challenge of working as part of a team on a wide variety of educational efforts. Communication, creative leadership, congeniality, and the ability to work cooperatively among a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, industry and agency groups is essential in our department and University.
