Description

The Department of Applied Linguistics at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for the position of Administrative Director in the English for Professional Purposes Intercultural Center (EPPIC). This academic center conducts research on patterns of language use in academic and professional units across the university, and applies insights from this research to the design and implementation of advanced English language support services for international multilingual students, scholars and faculty who use English as an additional language. These services include workshops, speaking groups, language assessments, individual consultations, and customized programming for a range of departments and units. EPPIC also promotes engaged intercultural communication in the larger university community through sponsorship of globally-themed student initiatives, multilingual peer writing tutors, and intercultural support programming for university faculty, staff, and advisers. The Administrative Director is responsible for defining strategic program initiatives, creating successful collaborative relationships with a range of university units, supervising the creation of English language support services for international multilinguals, developing new programming, hiring and mentoring staff, and managing the center’s budget. The Director works with faculty in the Department of Applied Linguistics, graduate students in Applied Linguistics, part-time language specialists, and an administrative assistant. As a faculty member in the Department of Applied Linguistics, the Director may also teach courses and serve on graduate student, departmental, and university-wide committees. Required Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, TESL, Linguistics or related fields emphasizing the study of spoken and/or written academic and professional language; Experience teaching university-level academic or professional English; Superior command of written and spoken academic English; and Experience in program administration and outreach. Desirable Qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in teaching ESL/EAP/ESP/EPP in culturally diverse settings; Experience conducting analysis of naturally-occurring written and/or spoken language. In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity. This position is a full-time, non-tenure line, academic appointment, to begin in January, 2020. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
