Print and Digital Proofreader/Editor

The Creative Services Unit of Penn State Outreach and Online Education is seeking a Print and Digital Proofreader/Editor with a background and demonstrated ability to proofread, edit, and rewrite text-only manuscripts and designed print and digital marketing materials to ensure accuracy, clarity, and adherence to style and brand positioning. This job will be filled as a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. The position requires knowledge and best practices regarding punctuation, grammar, word usage, and University/Chicago editorial styles for print, web, and email marketing. Attention to detail is of the utmost importance, as position requires the ability to: check accuracy of facts (dates, times, locations; postal, email, and web addresses; phone and fax numbers; costs and fees; course numbers, titles, descriptions, and number of credits; names of persons and organizations; publication names, etc.); compare manuscripts with proofs to ensure that approved changes have been made; correct any subsequent errors or problems; fix incorrect word divisions; check fonts and report inconsistencies (headings, subheadings, etc.); check spacing between words, sentences; headings and text; check alignment of text in columns, indentations; visually verify that text is readable; check captions to match photo or image. Knowledge of Word, Dreamweaver, and basic HTML is essential. Knowledge of WordPress, Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Penn State editorial guidelines is advantageous. Position requires ability to work both independently and with others, under minimal supervision, to complete numerous overlapping projects. We seek candidates who are able to demonstrate experience and ability to advance Outreach's diversity initiative. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
