Description

Under the supervision and direction of the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation for Stone Valley Recreation Area, the Coordinator for Stone Valley will serve on a team responsible for the daily operation and management of the Stone Valley Recreation Area. Campus Recreation is a department within the division of Student Affairs that provides recreation and wellness programs to the campus community through the operation and administration of the following: IM Building, McCoy Natatorium, Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, Tennis Center, White Building, Hepper Fitness Center, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs, and Intramural Sports. Campus Recreation is comprised of 53 full-time staff and more than 900 student staff members. Stone Valley Recreation Area is an outdoor recreation facility operated by The Pennsylvania State University. The 700-acre property is located over the mountain from the village of Pine Grove Mills along Shavers Creek. Stone Valley Recreation Area is a multi-use park that is shared by the Penn State Forestry Department, Shavers Creek Environmental Center, and Campus Recreation a department within the Division of Student Affairs. Stone Valley Recreation Area provides a unique and exciting opportunity to manage a wide array of existing park facilities and operations supporting activities such as boating, sailing, fishing, picnics, cabins/pavilion rentals, hiking/walking trails, and a high and low Adventure Challenge Course. In addition to these exciting offerings, this position will provide support for the future planning, design and construction of expanded recreational, wellness and student leadership facilities at Stone Valley. Specific responsibilities include assisting in the development, management and daily oversight of Stone Valley Recreation Area. This includes hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating more than twenty student staff, while maintaining a high level of customer service. Knowledge of basic safety and risk management practices as they relate to outdoor recreation and non-motorized boating. Leadership and supervisory skills to select, supervise, motivate and evaluate student employees relative to work performance, crisis management, and peer relationships as demonstrated through past supervision of staff. Typically requires an Associate's degree or higher plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Bachelor's degree is preferred. Experience with collegiate recreation including outdoor recreation and a knowledge of basic safety and risk management practices and industry standards is preferred. Knowledge of student development principles and an ability to provide student development opportunities for student staff. Work schedule may include occasional evening and weekend hours. This position requires independent work on assignments, while reviewing progress and updating the Assistant Director as appropriate. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication (oral and written) skills are essential. Must be able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines. Attention to detail and good judgment are vital requirements. The successful candidate will have the willingness to lead and work in a team-based environment as well as an eagerness to support and engage with all departmental and Student Affairs initiatives and efforts. Required to take initiative and have flexibility to adapt to shifting workload demands. The ability to foster a positive climate among a diverse group of staff, student employees and participants is essential.
