The Autonomous and Intelligent Systems Division in the Communications, Information, and Navigation Office (CINO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is seeking a Department Head for the Autonomy, Perception, and Cognition Department. Responsibilities of this position include: Provide technical leadership and support for direct customer programs to advance technologies in the fields of autonomy, artificial intelligence, unmanned intelligent systems, cognitive computing, and machine learning; seek and acquire new business by identifying future initiatives, research trends, and actionable sponsorship opportunities while delivering on existing sponsored research in the department; participate in new customer development efforts and business generation, and participate in relevant technical and academic communities; promote a thriving research and development environment that fosters creativity and collaboration among the faculty and engineering staff, facilitate recruitment, growth, and retention of outstanding technical contributors, and collaborate with other technical leads across the laboratory to support capture efforts; provide leadership to the department, to include personnel management, recruitment, development, and retention of department employees; prepare written and/or verbal presentations and proposals on complex issues and deliver to a broad variety of audiences, and learn/expand the best practices of autonomous, intelligent unmanned systems and intelligent agent decision aids. This position will be cross posted as Research Faculty and a Research and Development Engineer. Faculty rank will be commensurate with education and experience. Typically requires a Master’s degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline, plus at least ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s Degree in Computer Science and Engineering or Electrical Engineering is desired. A background in autonomy, unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, and machine learning is preferred. Previous experience as a Principal Investigator and experience with business development and successfully managing people is ideal. Experience in research and development of some aspect of autonomy, perception, cognition, or machine learning is required. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation.
