Description

The Mathematics Department is seeking to hire part-time student Assistants to assist in the administration of Calculus participant-active Peer Assisted Review (PAR) sessions. The Assistants will be responsible for running the reviews and assisting the students in their learning. Each semester, PAR sessions will be held during three different weekends. Although the hours for the positions will vary (depending on the need and the Assistant availability), each Assistant must commit to work at least 4 hours each of the three weekends in a semester, if needed. As of now, the remaining PAR weekends for 2019/2020 are as follows. Fall 2019 Semester- November 1-3, December 13-15; Spring 2020 Semester- February 14-16, March 27-29, May 1-3. Applicants must apply online. Review of the applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions have been filled. The successful candidates must have extensive knowledge of calculus and exemplary leadership skills in order to help the students master the skills and concepts in Calculus. The candidates should know the material really well, be able to anticipate mistakes before they occur, be able to intervene as necessary to keep the students successfully working toward the correct conclusion, not rush to show them the correct solution, be creative to ask leading questions so the students themselves discover the right path, be able to keep it moving at a good for all participants pace, etc. The review should focus on the concepts and the process, not just the answer, with the goal to help build a sturdy foundation and deep understanding. The candidates must have completed MATH 141 at University Park and received a high grade. Preference will be given to candidates who have participated in the Calculus Orals while taking MATH 140 and/or MATH 141. The candidates should submit a current resume (with their MATH 140/141 instructors listed as references).
