Description

The Department of Biobehavioral Health (BBH) in the College of Health and Human Development (HHD) at The Pennsylvania State University, in coordination with the Edna Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center, invites applications for a tenured position in Biobehavioral Health at the Associate or Full Professor level to begin as early as Fall 2020. This position is accompanied by an Endowed Professorship in Compassion and Caring; this faculty member must have a research program relevant to the etiology and/or consequences of caring and compassion that encapsulates biological processes or mechanisms that relate to adulthood and aging. Such a research program might include examination of caregiving, compassion-based practices (e.g., mindfulness and meditation), resilience, social support, and other social-relational processes associated with compassion and caring. All applicants meeting these criteria are encouraged to apply, including those with particular interest in the period of older adulthood and/or the processes of aging. This position would bring additional scientific leadership to the department, building on the existing strength of the department’s expertise in interdisciplinary research related to how biological, behavioral, psychological, sociocultural, and environmental variables interact to influence health and well-being. Departmental research examines substantive areas in which biology and behavior are inextricably interconnected (e.g., stress, psychoneuroimmunology, mental health, and sleep), issues related to chronic disease (including addiction, obesity, pain, cardiovascular disease, and cancer), as well as pertinent areas of scholarship that provide important windows into those aspects of health such as ethics, genetics and epigenetics, neuroscience, prevention science, health disparities, public health, innovative methods, and translational science. Department faculty are highly research active, transdisciplinary, and collaborative. Areas of interest germane to health that are likely to promote and enhance collaborative interdisciplinary research within the department will be viewed as a strength. We welcome applicants who use novel and integrative approaches that utilize a range of biological, psychological, and behavioral data, including (but not limited to) neuroimaging/fMRI, endocrinology/immunology, and cutting-edge statistical approaches. Applicants must demonstrate leadership of a clear program of research, a strong publication record, interest in collaboration across disciplines, commitment to mentoring students or early career researchers, and a track record of external grant funding, with excellent potential to carry forward such research and funding. Responsibilities of this position include continuing a fundable line of interdisciplinary biobehavioral health research, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, supervising and mentoring student researchers, and providing service to the Department, College, and University. A doctorate in social and behavioral science, psychology, biology, neuroscience, sociology, public health, or a related field is required.
