The Systems and Operations Automation (SOA) Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State is seeking a Department Head for The Complex System Engineering and Monitoring Applications Engineering Department (CSE). The CSE Department Head is expected to embrace ARL’s mission to discover, demonstrate, transition, and educate. The CSE Department Head will lead the execution of research, development, and prototyping of systems for a wide range of customers in the Department of Defense (DoD) and industry. The CSM Department’s primary focus is conducting process, asset, and facility system analyses. The expertise in this department includes machinery health management system design; diagnostic, predictive and prognostic algorithm development; component and system fault testbed development; Reliability Centered Maintenance; Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) technology assessment; and technology trade space studies and business case analysis. The candidates for this position are not required to be experts in the listed areas, but they must have expertise in a complementary area to broaden our technical capabilities. The CSE Department Head responsibilities include: Execute sponsored work; identify and secure new work; perform administrative duties; and foster the careers of 8-15 professionals including engineers, programmers, analysts, system developers, and information scientists. This job will be filled as a level 4, or level 5, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline or higher plus ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 4. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Technology plus fifteen years of related experience is desired. Preferred experience includes: Conducting process, asset, or facility system analyses. The successful candidate must have: A strong systems engineering background with a working knowledge across electrical and mechanical engineering disciplines; the ability to network and collaborate with Federal Government employees and contractors who support the DoD; previous experience in a management position; and excellent presentation, communication both written and verbal, and interpersonal skills. Domestic travel is required for this position. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
