Description

The Electronic Materials and Devices Department (EMDD) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State is seeking an Engineering Support Specialist to work with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Optical Microscopy (OM) of metals, ceramics, powders, fracture surfaces, 2D materials, and more. Responsibilities include: SEM imaging and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy EDS data collection and analysis of chemical composition; X-Ray Diffraction XRD data collection and analysis of crystal structure, phases, and texture; solvent cleaning and handling of ceramics parts for characterization and screen printing; screen printing metal electrodes for ceramic test parts and deliverables; furnace loading, unloading, and profiling; preparation of seed crystals for growth runs, including cutting and measuring; preparation of solution for experiments, including measuring and mixing; creation of PowerPoint summary reports and Excel documentation; and maintain accurate processing records, safe work areas, and laboratory equipment and troubleshooting as necessary. This job will be filled as a level 1, or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires an Associate's degree or higher , or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. An Associate’s degree in Metrology, Materials Science, or Engineering is desired. Preferred experience areas include: Raman and XRD characterization. Required experience areas include: SEM; EDS; sample preparation for microscopy; and Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
