The Smeal College of Business at The Pennsylvania State University (University Park, PA) seeks an experienced and innovative professional to lead as its first Chief Marketing Officer and Assistant Dean for Strategic Communication (CMO/AD). This individual will play a critical role as the college further expands upon its mission and priorities, delivering on a promise to provide extraordinary education, produce research with impact, and build a culture of integrity, diversity, service, and sustainability that extends far beyond the campus and classroom. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and accomplished marketing and communications professional to join Smeal. Tremendous thought and attention have recently been focused on the college’s communications programs, resulting in the elevation and expansion of this position. Reporting directly to Dean Charles Whiteman, the new CMO/AD will benefit from a recently completed brand essence exercise, led by the college’s board of visitors; an external communications audit conducted in advance of significant programmatic growth; and a commitment from the dean to invest in additional personnel and other resources. Academic and administrative leadership alike are eager to engage with the CMO/AD on developing new and enhancing existing marketing, branding, and communications vehicles to fully engage Smeal’s many constituencies and prospective audiences. The CMO/AD will provide leadership for the development and execution of a strategic and comprehensive marketing, branding, and communications plan for the entire college. This includes traditional, digital, and social media and channels; media and public relations; advertising; design and creative efforts; market analytics; and external agencies and partners. The CMO/AD will also work closely with the central office of communications and other key partners across the university, and therefore must have substantial experience in a complex institution with many stakeholders and audiences. The CMO/AD must be able to bring many stakeholders to the table, understand their various concerns and priorities, and craft strategies and programs that address multiple needs, from student recruitment to recognition of research to philanthropic and corporate relationships to a broader public awareness and increased reputation of the Penn State Smeal College of Business. The successful candidate will have seven to ten years of experience; be entrepreneurial, creative, collaborative; and have a robust perspective. Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
