The Institute for CyberScience (ICS) is seeking a Chief Architect for the ICS Advanced CyberInfrastructure (ICS-ACI). This position will be an integral contributor to a fast-paced and growing team of specialists supported by an exciting $60 million Penn State investment in research cyberinfrastructure. Penn State’s elite researchers use our high-performance research cloud to solve real-world problems by conducting simulations, data mining, and other high-performance computing operations. With ICS, you will have the opportunity to support this groundbreaking work. As our Chief Architect (CA), you will create and continually update an ICS-ACI architectural roadmap considering current state, emerging trends and technologies, and university services for the purpose of delivering university-wide computational and data infrastructure to University constituents (Faculty, Researchers, and PSU Administration) in support of sponsored research initiatives. This roadmap includes the continued development of ICS-ACI's High-Performance Research Cloud Initiative (HPRC) which provides an on-prem cloud; external cloud bursting; and public cloud workloads. The CA will also ensure that the ICS-ACI's HPRC systems capabilities include new initiatives such as AI/ML and a willingness to explore and integrate evolving platforms such as computational accelerators, like GPUs and FPGAs, and quantum computing. This successful candidate will engage external industry leaders and vendors to understand the direction of research cyberinfrastructure technology, including High-Performance Computing (HPC), cloud, data, AI/ML and Quantum and will investigate research directives within the scope of roadmap and the mission of the Institute. In addition, the CA will work closely with the Technical Director to set engineering and implementation expectations and will support engineering in requirements gathering and vendor engagements. The CA also provides technical expertise to university Research Faculty (Interdisciplinary Research) in research, specification, design, development, and implementation of unique scientific computational solutions. The CA will also produce, in collaboration with the ICS Leadership Team, technology white papers and support ICS’s efforts in obtaining infrastructure related grants. It is expected that CA will participate in executive briefings internal and external to the University. The CA is also expected to participate in Institute, University, and National level committees as appropriate. Some travel is expected with this position. This job will be filled as an R&D Engineer level 4. This is a standing position. To learn more about working for ICS, please visit Typically requires a Master's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline or higher plus ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Our desired qualifications include: A demonstrated experience in researching, evaluating, architecting, engineering, and developing large-scale HPC and cloud-based research environments. Familiarity with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux suite of software, OpenMP, MPI, GPUs, HPC, and cloud-based schedulers, Large enterprise backup systems, networking, Puppet, Ansible, Open Stack and the DevOps method of system development. Demonstrate strong collaboration and communication skills to a wide audience. The successful candidate will also demonstrate an ability to work independently with a strong work ethic. They should also be able to demonstrate time management skills and the ability to work multiple projects simultaneously. Architecture certifications are a plus.
