The Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a faculty position in Restoration Genetics. The position will be filled at an Assistant or Associate Professor level, commensurate with experience, on a 36-week academic year appointment, with 75% research and 15% teaching and 10% administrative responsibilities. We are seeking an outstanding candidate with a demonstrated interest and accomplishments in the genetics of species conservation and restoration, especially with forest trees and other plants. Appropriate areas of research expertise include, but are not limited to, conservation genetics, molecular breeding, landscape genetics, ecological genomics, bioinformatics, quantitative genetics, or other areas that incorporate molecular genetics with forest tree biology. Demonstrated interest in the application of these disciplines to the conservation and restoration of species threatened by invasive plants, insects, and disease is highly desired. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong, independent, nationally recognized and externally funded research program that engages both graduate and undergraduate students. Experience in collaborative interdisciplinary research, and an interest in engaging with external stakeholders are also highly desirable. This position must enhance the department’s existing curricula through the development of graduate level course(s) and participation in undergraduate instruction as appropriate. Active participation is expected in appropriate intercollege and departmental graduate degree programs. The successful candidate will also be evaluated for appointment as Director of the Schatz Center for Tree Molecular Genetics. The Schatz Center ( was established in 2003 with endowments in both the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management on the main campus at University Park and the Forest Technology program at the Mont Alto campus. Schatz Center endowments support visiting scholars, postdoctoral fellowships, undergraduate research projects, student field trips, a biennial tree genetics colloquium, and general research funds. Responsibilities of the director include leading a highly visible research program; recruiting and training visiting scholars, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers; and assisting faculty members at Mont Alto in hosting the Schatz Tree Genetics Colloquia. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in plant genetics, forest genetics, or allied fields such as genomics and conservation biology, and post-doctoral or previous academic experience. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. Previous training and/or research experience in forestry or similar applied disciplines is highly desirable. Communication, creative leadership, congeniality, and the ability to work cooperatively among a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, industry and agency groups are essential.
