Description

The Penn State Small Business Development Center (SBDC) seeks a full-time Business Consultant to provide consulting assistance to pre-venture and existing business owners in areas of business planning, financing, loan packaging, marketing, demographics, and other areas of management and technical support to promote small business growth, expansion and productivity. This position reports to the Penn State SBDC Director and is located off-campus at Innovation Park. In addition to small business counseling through one-on-one contact, the Business Consultant develops, prepares and presents educational seminars; represents the SBDC in the community through relationships with strategic partners such as Chambers of Commerce and lending institutions; manages and coordinates client contacts and case load; and works closely with Penn State entrepreneurship programs, graduate assistants and office administrative staff. Job Requirements include: Travels occasionally to state and national training events, conferences and client locations within Penn State SBDC service area. Works occasional evening and/or weekend hours to present educational programs or represent the SBDC at networking events. Assigns and facilitates tasks to Graduate Assistants. May supervise, interview or hire as needed. Conducts initial client interview and ongoing communication to provide in-depth assistance in a variety of business fields through one-on-one consulting and through small business seminars. Demonstrate understanding of identifying high growth/high opportunity clients and how to engage the state/region-wide services available. The office of Penn State SBDC covers Centre, Mifflin, Clinton and Lycoming Counties. Travel with University fleet car and/or personal car will be required at times with valid driver’s license. Communication skills include active listening, effective client interviewing using open ended questions, creative problem solving, and the ability to handle difficult people. Computer competency includes capable of applying and maneuvering within various software packages including but not limited to all Microsoft Office and Office 365 applications, Zoom, CRM’s and the Internet. This role includes monitoring client/business progress, assists in client assessment of business and makes recommendations regarding problem areas. Establishes and maintains all client and milestone information for assigned cases. Advises on business finance and assists clients in determining financial needs and potential funding sources including community programs targeted toward lending opportunities as well as coordinating and evaluating loan packaging among financing sources. Assists with preparing business loan proposals, structured narrative business plans, extensive and detailed financial projections, collateral documentation, equipment lists, resumes, and other documents as required. Identifies and refers clients to various programs and outside organizations which have the ability to assist the client such as SBDC specialty programs, Export, Government Procurement, Ben Franklin Technology Centers, EMAP, PennTAP and state energy initiatives. Presents workshops to pre-venture and existing business owners as needed and coordinated by the SBDC on business start-up fundamentals and other relevant business topics. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Bachelor’s Degree in business, management, operations, accounting, or finance preferred. Preferred Skills and Experience: working knowledge of cyber security, interest in professional development and continuing education through business publications, credit or noncredit coursework and participation in the activities of appropriate professional organizations. Previous experience with CRM and market research databases such as First Research. Intermediate to advanced financial statement and pro forma modeling. Ability to work independently. Problem assessment and resolution; sound business judgment and ability to communicate complex or sensitive recommendations. Excellent written and verbal communication. Commitment to engage and embrace diversity across all levels of entrepreneurial development stages, student interaction, professional partners and the communities served by the SBDC. Commitment to fulfilling the mission and performance goals of the SBDC such as number of clients served, number of businesses opened, job creation, annual increases in revenues and profits of those businesses and capital formation. We seek candidates who are able to demonstrate experience and ability to advance Invent Penn State’s initiative through the commonwealth. This is a fixed-term position funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
