Description

The Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Designer/Checker. The primary responsibility of this position is to be a checker for Mechanical drawings. This position will review and provide feedback for drawings, designs and documentation; create and implement ARL design standards; and work in concert with senior staff to interpret and educate engineering and design staff on ASME and ARL standards. Additional responsibilities include: Utilize computer aided design software to review mechanical CAD file creation rules, completeness of design documentation including notes and manufacturing information to ensure all phases of documentation efforts are in compliance with department standards; provide appropriate training and mentoring in areas of responsibility/expertise to new employees related to the approved documentation process; and participate in design review and configuration management meetings as requested and provide work status updates to senior personnel and engineering. You will also review and provide comments, corrections or suggestions via verbal, written or electronic communication for: detail drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials, and other documentation using accepted methods and techniques including drawing preparation to ASME Y14.100 (or equivalent); research engineering programs with respect to utilization of computer aided design, documentation, databases, or other software tools; and application, understanding and explanation of GD&T (ASME Y14.5-2018). Typically requires an Associate's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An Associate’s degree in Engineering Design is preferred. Preferred experience areas include Siemens NX, and machine shop and manufacturing processes. Detailed knowledge of general and ARL specific drafting and design practices, standards, and specifications. Experience requirements include: The successful candidate will have strong self-management skills with the ability to work individually or in group settings, strong written and verbal communication skills, and hold a comfort level working with a diverse group of customers.
