Penn State Information Technology (IT) provides IT services in support of the teaching, research, and outreach mission objectives of the University. Enterprise Networking and Communication Services is seeking a highly motivated, self-driven, and collaborative team player to fill the position of Cyber Security Systems Engineer. The successful candidate will actively participate in the testing, implementation of designs, and development of procedural documents to be used to deploy firewall architecture and subsequent firewall services that will be provided. Upon the deployment of the firewalls, the Cyber Security Systems Engineer will coordinate with and provide guidance to the networking and security staff of each of the Penn State internal colleges and departments in order to facilitate the successful migration of their networks to behind the enterprise firewall. This job provides front-line support on the enterprise firewalls and requires on-call work and work outside of business hours. The person hired will participate in the Change Advisory Board (CAB) to participate in the approval process for non-standard firewall change requests. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position requires strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work and manage projects effectively across (specialized and service) teams. The successful candidate must also demonstrate advanced knowledge and experience deploying enterprise class firewalls in a large-scale production environment, independently create and present processes for the purpose of providing mature firewall services, enthusiastically learn new skills and technologies, handle multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously with a close attention to detail. It is expected that a successful candidate will also have a fundamental and broad understanding of the functionality and configuration of Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) technologies, including but not limited to Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN’s), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS/VPLS), Ethernet, IPv6, network security, and standards based protocols. Additionally, it is important that the person filling this position is well versed and competent in the industry best practices for implementing, administrating, and analyzing/diagnosing Next Generation Firewall (NGFW) technologies such as virtual firewalls, firewall policy, logging, threat prevention, URL filtering, Network Address Translation (NAT), Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack prevention, Virtual Private Networks (VPN’s), sandbox tools, high availability, and centralized firewall management servers in a multi-tenant environment. Knowledge of ITIL and Service Now is desired.
