Description

The Mechanical Systems and Design Department in the Vehicles and Unmanned Systems Division of the Undersea Systems Office within the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking motivated and talented Mechanical Engineers whose primary function will be to analyze, test, and build hardware for undersea applications. The ideal candidate should be able to work both independently and as a member of a larger team and may need to lead projects or be the lead structural engineer on larger tasks. This position will be cross posted as a Research Faculty and Research and Development Engineer. This job will be filled as a level 3 or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline (Master's degree preferred) or higher plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or Aerospace Engineering is preferred. Experience with one of the following is ideal: Shock/vibration; thermodynamics/heat transfer; and/or structural failure. A solid understanding of manufacturing methods and design for manufacturing is desired. Candidates should be comfortable using analytical methods where appropriate and computational analysis for more challenging problems. Experience with structural finite element analysis required. Occasional travel to support meetings and tests is required. You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply. Employment with the ARL will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. ARL is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion; we believe this is central to our success as a Department of Defense designated University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). We are at our best when we draw on the talents of all parts of society, and our greatest accomplishments are achieved when diverse perspectives are part of our workforce. These are fixed-term appointments funded for one year with excellent possibility of re-funding.
