The Office of Science Engagement within the Office of Associate Dean for Undergraduate Students, Eberly College of Science is seeking a graduate student to support the College’s mission of providing enrichment experiences for its undergraduate students through consultation and programming. The Office of Science Engagement facilitates undergraduate academic, professional, and personal growth by increasing access to transformative co-curricular experiences in research, career development, and education abroad. We aim to Cultivate awareness of opportunities; Offer a broad range of support and resources, and Provide tools to increase access to and participation in transformative co-curricular experiences. The graduate intern will provide support to SC 402: Science-Related Employment: Corporate Organization, Opportunities, and Expectations. SC 402 responsibilities may involve setting up the classroom, grading assignments, creating and grading quizzes, tracking attendance, sending notifications to students, and posting recordings for the online section through CANVAS. Opportunities to assist with facilitating class periods may also be available, pending interest of the candidate. The intern will also provide support for internship and co-operative education courses. The graduate intern will be a key contributor in running the primary functions of the office- providing study abroad guidance to students and working on faculty led programs, doing resume reviews, working on employer relations, supporting the Career fair and managing the summer research opportunities. Responsibilities may also include designing and managing programs like peer mentoring, creating assessment tools, writing weekly newsletters, updating Office of Science engagement promotional materials, managing the OSE website, interviewing undergraduate students in the College who had enrichment opportunities, developing relationships with various Science related student organizations at Penn State and using social media to market some of the programming efforts within the College. The graduate intern may research and gather data about organizational structures of various engagement offices at large research universities particularly supporting STEM students. Based on the assessment/benchmarking of those structures, the graduate intern would recommend programming and guide best practices for Science Engagement. This position provides an opportunity to get an overview of the operations of an engagement office in the Eberly College of Science. It helps the student gain an understanding of theory to practice model, be a part of a new initiative, and enhance his or her knowledge of best practices for inclusions by interacting with committed students from all backgrounds. Opportunities to be involved in other aspects of the office operation will be available, depending on the selected student’s interests and availability. Required Qualifications: Masters/PhD Student; Excellent writing, communication and research skills; An interest and, preferably, experience in multimedia development (graphics, videos, presentations); An interest in working collaboratively with faculty, students and staff to develop student programming; Strong organizational skills and Previous experience with undergraduates and administration preferred.
