Description

The Institute for CyberScience (ICS) seeks a talented and goal-oriented individual to join our engineering team as an Implementation Lead. You will be an integral contributor to a dynamic and growing team of specialists supported by an exciting $60 million Penn State investment in Advanced research CyberInfrastructure (ICS-ACI). Penn State’s elite researchers use our high-performance research infrastructure to solve real-world problems by conducting simulations, data mining, and other high-performance computing operations. You will participate as an important member of our engineering team in supporting this work. As an Implementation Lead, you will lead an engineering team providing guidance and expertise in the areas of implementation and platforms that ICS-ACI supports as well as working with University constituents (Faculty and Researchers) to design, develop, and implement High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters, high capacity storage and scientific software applications necessary to support sponsored research. Job duties include directing and guiding the infrastructure team in delivering innovative problem-solving approaches to software, hardware, and user issues. Part of this role will include recruiting, training, and mentoring junior engineers within the team. The successful applicant will demonstrate an understanding of CPU and storage architectures and will be able to communicate to peers and higher-level managers relating it to the broad research objectives of ICS. Additional job duties include documenting, defending, and communicating design decisions, maintain and managing ICS milestones defined by ICS leadership, conduct and/or oversee pre-operations training on newly implemented functionality and participate in ICS grants/proposals. This person will be expected to work closely with the Engineering Lead, Operations Lead, Technical Director, and Chief Architect and will be an integral part of the ICS defined design and implementation phase. This job will be filled as an Research and Design Engineer level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher-level jobs. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline (Master's degree preferred) or higher plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Our desired qualifications include: Candidates must be able to demonstrate experience in the following areas: Leading a Team; Linux; Networking and network-based services such as DNS, DHCP, NTP, LDAP, NFS, SMB; Scripting Languages, Singularity Containers; HPC relevant schedulers (e.g., Moab/Torque, Slurm, etc.); Virtualization services (VMWare, RHEV, OpenStack); Automated configuration management software (e.g., Puppet, Ansible, Chef, RH Satellite, etc.); Parallel File Systems (e.g., GPFS).
