The Child Care Center at Hort Woods located on Penn State’s Main Campus is seeking an assistant director. The Child Care Center at Hort Woods, which opened in 2011, serves approximately 180 children from 6 weeks to 5 years of age in ten mixed-age classrooms. The center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), with a Keystone STARS rating of 4. The Assistant Director will assist the Director and one other Assistant Director with specific areas of the center’s operation including curriculum development, parent and student involvement, program evaluations, and faculty/student research projects. Specific responsibilities include: providing administrative support, supervising assigned staff, preparation of reports, proposals, newsletters, and other publications; maintaining the center’s staff schedules; orienting, scheduling, supervising, and mentoring student interns and other student volunteers and employees; may providing tours for prospective students, interns and community; overseeing children’s files in accordance with NAEYC and DHS guidelines and regulations; and overseeing the program’s resource and children’s libraries. Additional duties include developing and implementing professional development programs for center staff and helping and supporting staff in maintaining safe and professional work environments. In addition, this position may be involved with serving as an information resource, providing initial contact with outside agencies and the community in matters related to child care. This position will be expected to interact, cooperate and coordinate with Child Care Center at Hort Woods leaders on various matters. State College offers a vibrant community with outstanding recreational facilities, a low crime rate, and excellent public schools. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate will have experience working in early childhood education settings. Additional work experience preferred. Other requirements include excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, active infant/child first-aid and CPR certifications, and good judgment in potential emergency situations. This position must be able to handle sensitive issues with confidentiality. Required clearances include: PA Child Care Clearances; FBI Fingerprinting; Physical Exam; and tuberculosis test. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with good possibility of re-funding.
