Penn State New Kensington is seeking part-time peer tutors in all subject areas. Applicants must be Penn State New Kensington students. Tutor schedules are flexible and typically work between 5 and 20 hours per week. Peer Tutors should be excellent students who set a good example for the students they will tutor—through their efficient study habits, excellent academic performance, and responsible personal behavior. Peer Tutors must be knowledgeable in their subject areas and capable of conveying that knowledge to others. To be a peer tutor, a student must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and an A or A- in the subject(s) tutored. The Learning Center expects employees to exemplify civil, courteous, and appropriate behavior at all times. Please submit a resume and cover letter with your application. In addition, a faculty recommendation is required, and applicants can obtain the faculty recommendation form from the Learning Center Coordinator. Qualifications for this position include: Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; Earned an A or A- in courses that you will tutor (some B+ grades accepted in certain circumstances); Must be able to tutor at New Kensington for at least 2 semesters; Strong communication and interpersonal skills; Faculty recommendation. Tutoring responsibilities will include: Attend training workshops and meetings, as required; Respond to all inquiries and requests from students and Learning Center Coordinator in a timely manner; Fully understand and comply with all confidentiality practices; Arrive on time for scheduled appointments; Manage tutoring appointments in a dependable manner and communicate any schedule changes with all parties involved; Work with individual students and groups, guiding them toward improved independent performance in their coursework and general academic skills; Actively engage students by asking questions that will facilitate their understanding; Encourage students to improve their study methods; Maintain a professional attitude and helpful demeanor; Keep up to date records of tutoring sessions; Complete required paperwork fully, correctly, and on time; Maintain strong academic standing – grades and integrity.
