The Engineering Services Division of The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking a Lead Manufacturing Engineer – Mechanical to contribute to the design process and oversee fabrication of mechanical components and assemblies across the Laboratory. This position will be a key component in ARL’s ability to successfully execute rapid prototyping programs and to successfully work with and transition technology to our Industry partners. Responsibilities include: Work with ARL research and development engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle to provide Design For Manufacturability / Affordability (DFM/A) recommendations, identify appropriate manufacturing partners, provide forecasting to the ARL Machine Shop and external part fabrication shops, establish priorities for vendors, and serve as technical POC on part fabrication jobs; establish and maintain relationships with vendors – focus on building strategic partnerships with a small group of core vendors; establish partnership goals and metrics, including measures of quality and vendor performance; ensure ARL engineers have access to state-of-the-art mechanical fabrication, manufacturing processes, and resources for material selection and material treatments; investigate new and existing capabilities and transfer knowledge and processes to the appropriate Engineering Organization to improve ARL’s capabilities delivery and quality; serve as the liaison between project managers, requisitioners, purchasing, and vendors and participate in materials flow coordination routines; ensure alignment between program, purchasing, planning, and expediting; and provide oversight of the procurement process for mechanical components and assemblies. May lead teams or a department for the right candidate. This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline (Master's degree preferred) or higher plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or additional years of experience in a related field is desired. Experience requirements include: Mechanical design and fabrication of complex components, DFM/A practices, machine shop and production operations, quality assurance and reliability practices, and supervision and leadership of engineering designers and machinists.
