The Nittany Artificial Intelligence (AI) Alliance at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) is looking for a talented and highly motivated intern to work on AI-related projects, gaining hands-on experience that enhances their learning at Penn State, while also gaining highly marketable development experience. Selected candidates will become a software development team member and assist with the development of prototypes leveraging artificial intelligence and the design and configuration of cognitive modules within existing cognitive agents. We are looking for front-end developer interns to join our team for Fall 2019. As a front-end developer intern, you will collaborate with the other software development team members to do meaningful work while also growing your programming expertise. A portfolio showing prior work is required in order to be considered. Your portfolio presentation should demonstrate a command of best practices and principals of front-end development through a combination of demos, prototypes, and/or final products. Responsibilities include: Take wireframes and concepts created by a UX Designer and drive them from concept to implementation leveraging technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; Perform work leveraging development frameworks; Produce, modify, and maintain web application user interfaces; Implement responsive designs; Working with the Data Science intern, contribute to the back-end experience, collaborating on APIs, data integration and more; Maintain software workflow and versioning; Test all functionality during development for usability and fix any bugs; Document all code according to common development best practices; Create technical documentation of all work in order to provide knowledge sharing and transfer with other team members and PSU personnel. Requirements include: Demonstrated understanding of requirements, design, code, and user-experience interactions; Have demonstrated abilities in front-end development through a portfolio of demos, prototypes, and/or final products; Experience with HTML5; Experience with responsive CSS. Experience with CSS frameworks like Bootstrap a plus; Experience with modern JavaScript. Experience with JavaScript frameworks a plus; Experience with a code version tool. Experience with GitHub a plus; Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills; Be task-focused, collaborative, and willing to learn; Strong communication skills (written and verbal); Critical thinking skills; Ability to collaborate effectively with UI/UX designers, data science engineers, and other PSU department members. Preferred experience includes: Python experience; Experience with team collaboration software, with Microsoft Teams experience a plus. This is a part-time position working 15-20 hours per week at $15.00 per hour from ASAP after start of the PSU Fall semester through December 2019. Possibility for internship to extend into Spring semester based on Nittany AI Alliance workload and availability of the candidate.
