Description

The Ali Lab in the Department of Entomology at The Pennsylvania State University seeks a highly motivated Laboratory Assistant. The lab uses field and lab experiments, combined with chemical, behavioral and molecular data, to address fundamental ecological and evolutionary questions that are relevant to pest management, conservation and better understand plant-herbivore interactions. We primarily work in agricultural and natural systems. We are looking for an enthusiastic, hard-working and responsible individual to join our team. Primary duties will include: Conducting chemical ecology work (volatile collections and analysis) and molecular biological work, such as sample processing, DNA and RNA extractions, PCR/qPCR reactions and enzymatic reactions with a spectrophotometry; Training and coordinating lab work with other lab personnel (including students and visiting scholars) in various laboratory techniques; Maintaining and using analytical equipment GC/MS, HPLC, LC/MS; Maintaining plant and insect colonies; Conducting literature reviews on various topics related to conservation, genetics, chemical ecology, and evolution; Assisting with field experiments and behavioral assays when necessary. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Biology/chemistry or related field of study highly preferred. Experience with plants and insects is highly desirable. The successful candidate must be able to work within a team environment and demonstrate a genuine appreciation in working with diverse groups.
