An NIH-funded postdoctoral research position is available in the Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute, Penn State College of Medicine in the area of autonomic and cardiovascular physiology. The laboratory is focused on understanding the role of the sympathetic nervous system in the control of cardiovascular function in health and in cardiovascular disease. Specifically, the major goal of this project is to examine the roles of distension of limb veins in autonomic regulation. These studies utilize the techniques of microneurography, Doppler ultrasound, MRI, and pharmacologic interventions. The ideal candidate must have a PhD or MD degree at the time of appointment (but MD/PhD is preferred). A strong background in autonomic, cardiovascular physiology is required. Prior experience performing microneurography (single unit recording preferred) and Doppler ultrasound in healthy subjects and patients is required. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in all aspects of the research project, including experimental design, data collection, data analysis, preparation of graphs and figures, and preparation of manuscripts. Strong writing and oral communication skills are highly desired. Ample opportunity exists for collaboration with other investigators in the Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute engaging in pre-clinical and clinical cardiovascular research.
