Penn State’s Office of Strategic Communications - the University’s central news, public relations, and marketing division - seeks a Public Relations Coordinator to join its News and Media Relations unit. This newly created position sits on the proactive media team and will assist with enhancing Penn State’s reputation and visibility by helping to implement communications tactics that drive media placements. Typical duties include helping to build and maintain media lists, develop pitches, facilitate outreach to reporters, monitor/track media placements, evaluate social analytics, and help assemble high-level reports for University leadership. Responsibilities also include helping to find and/or create content for Penn State’s social platforms. The successful candidate will be able to monitor and interpret fast-moving story developments, effectively communicate across internal and external channels, and understand the multi-channel media environment. We’re looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and will take initiative to help identify current trends and topical issues that could potentially elevate the reputation of the University though visible engagement. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team player who is self-motivated, has high ethical and professional standards, and can interact effectively with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff. Knowledge of communications planning and traditional and non-traditional media strategies is a plus. Previous experience in a university setting is not required. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred bachelor’s degree or higher in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a similar discipline. Excellent analytical, organizational, writing, editing, and verbal communications skills are essential.
