Description

The Office of Information Security (OIS) is seeking applications for a Cyber Security Systems Engineer that will work as part of the Consulting and Architecture team. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and dynamic Information Technology professional to grow and expand their knowledge into the rapidly growing field of cybersecurity. The Consulting and Architecture team works broadly with units across the University to offer guidance on secure network and system design, architecture, and configurations. We participate in the request for purchasing (RFP) process and serve as subject matter experts on working groups and committees. This team is also responsible for Penn State’s Authority to Operate (ATO) procedure and guiding units through the process of implementing a secure enclave to achieve ATO. This is a very customer focused position with regular interaction with stakeholders across various systems both large and small. Finally, we handle general security consulting needs from questions to security related presentations and other activities that help promote cybersecurity across the University. This job will be filled as a level 2 or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Preferred experience includes: Working with cloud computing providers, such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure; an understanding of security principles, working with next generation firewall technologies, network infrastructure design; and experience across multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. The successful candidate will have a broad range of Information Technology experience and a passion for working closely with stakeholders to promote and balance security with overall usability. Required qualifications include the ability to develop and give presentations to both specialized and non-specialized users, developing consistent and comprehensive documentation and the ability to work as part of a team and work independently with self-accountability on projects. This position also requires exceptional communication and presentation skills with diverse audiences, as well as strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
