The Eberly College of Science is seeking an academic adviser to be part of an advising team focused on students pursuing the majors of Premedicine and Science in the BS/MBA program and any Penn State student interested in a health professional schools for medical, dental, podiatry, optometry, and physician assistant. Duties will include providing academic advising to assigned students, assisting students in navigating University policies and procedures and program curriculum, and coordinating special events and programs which directly assist undergraduate students. In addition: Develop and deliver ancillary workshops for students on specific aspects of the Prehealth application process, including the committee letter process, gap year planning, and personal statement writing; assist Schreyer's Honors College students in Premedicine and Science majors by monitoring Honors requirements; teach first-year seminar for students interested in the Premedicine and/or Science majors; serve as primary contact for the Science BS/MBA program including recruiting, interviewing, advising, and coordinating first year seminar activities; serve on pre-professional evaluation committee to interview and evaluate health professions applicants; compile and write committee letters for medical, dental, and optometry applicants; assist with New Student Orientation, including meet with parents, advise students, and make presentations. The successful candidate will work closely with the director of the Premedicine major, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Students and the Director of the Science Advising Center to support the mission of health professions advising. We are seeking an individual who is committed to working with the advising team to provide high quality service to students and who will work to enhance the climate for the diverse student population in the College. Adherence to the Eberly College of Science Code of Mutual Respect is expected. This job will be filled as a level 3 or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Applicants with a science and or business background are preferred. The successful candidate will have a strong background in academic advising with a proven track record and commitment to serving diverse student populations. Other required skills include attention to detail excellent verbal and written communication, and proficiency using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint are desirable. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
