Description

The Quality Talk research team has an opening for a Graduate Assistant interested in contributing to a research project about mathematics classroom discourse and mathematics teacher education. This National Science Foundation-funded research project is focused on developing preservice elementary teachers’ mathematics pedagogy, specifically reasoning and discourse-rich pedagogy, during undergraduate teacher preparation. Quality Talk, an established classroom discussion model, will be adapted for use in undergraduate mathematics teacher education settings. The Graduate Assistant will be working with preservice and practicing elementary teachers, teacher educators, and other project researchers. Responsibilities include the development of mathematics lessons; coding, scoring, and analyzing video discourse data; taking part in teacher professional development; as well as data collection, analysis, and dissemination activities. The ideal candidate will have excellent mathematics content knowledge, as well strong oral and written communication skills. Experience teaching in elementary or middle grades classrooms is desired but not required. Moderate-to-advanced computer/technology literacy is a plus. The candidate must be willing to travel between the University Park campus and local schools and have availability in their schedule to work during the school day. All travel will be reimbursed.
