Description

Penn State Abington serves racially-and ethnically-diverse students, first-generation college students, students from a range of socio-economic backgrounds, and a significant international student population. This position will be responsible for providing academic advising services to first- and second- year students enrolled in the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS), in Abington College premajors, and University Park Colleges and to students who are in Conditional or Non-degree status. This individual will assist students in clarification of educational goals, selection of appropriate courses, and development of an academic plan to facilitate the completion of a degree program. This individual will be able to interact effectively with students of diverse socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, understand campus and community resources and serve as a referral agent for students needing assistance beyond academic issues. This individual will participate in various college programs such as New Student Orientation, Accepted Student Programs, Spend A Summer Day, Major Nights, and group advising presentations. This individual will have the ability to listen and understand; and be flexible and open-minded in responding to student needs and concerns. Respect for diversity and a willingness to learn about others is essential. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are critical. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong attention to detail, and a desire to work with students in a high-volume center are necessities for success in this position. Experience and comfort with group presentations is desirable. Written and verbal fluency in a second language is a plus. A working knowledge of computer applications is required. This position requires interaction with students, parents, faculty, and various college staff members. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
