Description

This position provides specialized information services to library users, usually to those researching, teaching, or learning about topics in architecture, landscape architecture, or related design fields. These services include responding to inquiries for design information or information-seeking strategies or proactively creating guides and instructional materials to help others with their information needs. These services also include producing documentation of the built environment with a special focus on Central Pennsylvania and other selected topics of interest to Penn State’s faculty and programs. The position promotes the services and resources of the Architecture and Landscape Architecture Library with on-site displays and via email and social media. It enhances the collections by maintaining an awareness of recent publications and open access Internet sources and recommending additions to the collections, selecting gifts-in-kind, and choosing items to place in remote storage. It coordinates the unit’s functions related to Interlibrary Loans and to the deposit of degree papers. Reporting to the Library Manager, the Information Resources and Services Specialist 3 is part of a team in which all members provide direct patron services to in-person and remote library users and collaboratively seek improvements in the Libraries’ services and work environment. The person in this position will be expected to maintain a comprehensive knowledge of information resources, reference publications, appropriate subject databases, and key web resources in specialized subject areas (architecture, landscape architecture, and to a lesser extent, graphic design) and to maintain a proficient knowledge of design literature, practices, and current issues. A current working knowledge of general library policies, procedures, and systems will also be required and will include procedures for metadata creation. Effective communications are required in a highly specialized academic setting focusing on the design environment, as well as the ability to adapt to, and promote rapid changes in technology and services. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A demonstrated knowledge of research methods, technical writing, or student support are strongly preferred. Must possess the ability to solve problems independently and collaboratively; demonstrate outstanding organizational and communications skills, both oral and written; have the ability to learn rapidly and to work under pressure, handling multiple tasks in a fast-pace workplace; and be able to contribute to a dynamic and diverse organization with a strong commitment to service, diversity, equity, respect, and inclusion. Some evening and/or weekend hours will be required. Days/hours are subject to change over intersession, breaks, summer, and holidays. The University Libraries values diversity of thought, perspective, experience, and people, and is actively committed to a culture of inclusion and respect. We encourage candidates to apply who thrive in a welcoming multicultural environment.
