Description

The Office of Technology Management (OTM) is seeking an experienced and dedicated individual to serve as the Accountant 2 for their department. This position is primarily responsible for the administration of the $2.1 million annual patent expense budget. This entails properly processing over 1,520 invoices annually from over 24 different legal firms, as well as those from multiple other colleges and universities with which The Penn State Research Foundation (PSRF) has inter-institutional agreements for cost sharing of jointly-owned technologies. This position also collaborates with, and provides financial input to, OTMs Technology Licensing Officers for the purpose of developing strategies and management plans for the reimbursement of patent expenses from licensees for both ongoing and new license agreements with PSRF. The Accountant must maintain open communications and good working relationships with the nearly one hundred external companies which licensed Penn State technologies for the reimbursement of patent fees. Of those, an estimated twenty percent are start-up companies on deferred patent reimbursement payment plans as part of the Invent Penn State initiative, and therefore require milestone tracking and specialized payment negotiations. The primary functions of this position include accounts payable for patent legal work, accounts receivable from licensees, financial reporting to the Corporate Controller’s office for Financial Statement preparation, providing support for the annual audit of The Penn State Research Foundation, and ensuring compliance with University procedures in general accounting practices, budgets, and purchasing policies. The Accountant also provides detailed analyses of financial expenses and reimbursements to the Assistant Vice President for Research and Director of OTM, the Associate Director of OTM, and the OTM Administrative Support Coordinator for overall office budget management, annual Association for University Technology Managers (AUTM) reporting, income/expense trend analyses, and special reporting requests. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with Inteum, IBIS, FIT, eBuy, and Microsoft Access is also preferred. The successful candidate must be able to work both independently and as a cooperative member of a team, have effective oral and written communication skills, and be detail oriented. This individual should be proactive in identifying problems and solutions, possess a strong work ethic, and demonstrate initiative. Candidate should be proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite of applications, especially Excel.
